Matrix Trivia

Morpheus

in Greco-Roman mythology, one of the sons of Hypnos (Somnus), the god of sleep. Morpheus sends human shapes (Greek morphai) of all kinds to the dreamer, while his brothers Phobetor (or Icelus <http://search.britannica.com/bcom/eb/article/idxref/1/0,5716,186209,00.html>) and Phantasus <http://search.britannica.com/bcom/eb/article/idxref/1/0,5716,186210,00.html> send the forms of animals and inanimate things, respectively. It is possible, although not very probable, that his name actually meant "Dark" (from Greek morphnos).

In the movie: Reeves plays Neo, supposedly "the One" who will lead mankind out of computer-generated bondage. An anagram of Neo is One.

In the Bible: Nebuchadnezzar was a Babylonian king who searched for the meaning of his dreams.
In the movie: Morpheus names his ship Nebuchadnezzar and visits an oracle to interpret reality -- really a dream.

In the Bible: Judas, one of the 12 trusted apostles, betrays Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.
In the movie: The traitor is Cypher (think 'Lucifer'), one of Morpheus' seven trusted crew members. He betrays Morpheus for a steak dinner.

What's in a Name?
Thomas Anderson - The name "Thomas" can be linked to "Doubting Thomas", in that Neo never really believed that he was The One, and had to see for himself that he WAS The One. The name "Anderson" means "Son of Man", which is how Jesus was often referred.
Neo's name means "new" or "change". That's exactly WHY he was there. Neo was expected to change things, to bring about a new world order. Neo is also an anagram: Neo - Eon - "One".
